TRIMPIN: the sound of invention

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VKpENG_qRXE&feature=player_embedded#!
the man on here is pretty cool in the way hes created a large instrument and experiments with sounds that no one else has thought of doing before. the sounds that come from this sound very sci-fi and surreal and it shows that sounds can be created in different ways, even by experimenting with previous instruments there are about.

Motion and Audio Experiments Video

http://vimeo.com/1619106
after finding this link on the internet, I found this video really interesting in the way it looks at the use of accompanying sound and music in the way it reflects what is being shown. By this i mean, the word 'Crush' is animated using sound effects we'd associate with this word to back up the meaning and action within the clip. If a more calmer tone was used, it probably wouldn't hav desired affect of appearing to 'crush' or explode.

sense of space project-our idea.

Our idea was basically to get the sound of effects for a murder/ raid. we recorded our footage over 2 days gathering noises from the roads, the rainfall a busy city centre as well as lots of car noises, footsteps, digging sounds and many more.
Our story was about a man who the audience doesn't know any thing about. you hear him get into a car and start driving. there is then a loud banging at the door, we hear a man scream and what sounds like a sword to this house owners chest. the man continues to murder him by smashing his skull. these noises were created by us smashing a pumpkin with a bat. the man then enters the house and trashes the place as if he looking for something. we then hear the man drag the body to his car and he drives away. He then gets out of his car and it is raining heavily, we hear the body being dragged across the floor. there is then a pause. this was to help the tension build up. we then hear loud digging noises, this goes on for a few seconds just before we hear sirens coming in from behind. these police sirens get louder and louder and then it suddenly ends.
we used quite a few atmosphere tracks to get a good ambient sound through out the whole story.

Chris Watson

http://www.chriswatson.net/
Chris Watson. net allowed me to look more closely at the sounds captured by the sound artist Chris Watson. seems a lot of his works capture the sounds most associated with natural environment, creating peaceful and natural images in the listener's head. A lot of his sounds capture birds and sounds we are so use to hearing we overlook and dont pay attention too as they are really familiar. Only when we hear these sounds (bird calling, wind, bell chimes) out of context, when we're not actually in that setting but maybe in the comfort of our own home do we pay attention to what we first would have missed.

Favourite sounds research

on StumbleUpon I came across this website. http://www.stumbleupon.com/su/2SGJ5Z/favoritechicagosounds.com/soundmaps.php/ it shows the creators explorin sounds with the use of a map of Chicago.  explore what sounds people prefer all over the city. This to me is an interesting and very visually exciting way of storing the sound preferences ofpeople, and looking at sounds other people might ignore and storing it all together. This could be very valuable information because if someone wanted to create sound or use sound within a piece of film or music they would want to know what their audience likes or links different noises with. each snippet of conversation is also very interesting to read by itself.

Edale

Edale was a trip we went on to film a short silent 3 min film. this film could be about anything from a documentary to slide shows. me and my partner decided to experiment a bit with our idea. by trying crazy camera angels and wild zooms. our experimental piece was all about technology in the out doors. we at first wanted to go with an adam and eve sort of idea, as if an apple laptop was the apple from the tree and some loose cables was the evil snake. we thought this was a good idea although couldn't really figure out how to make this into a 3 min piece.
so after a bit more sitting down and thinking we stuck with the original idea of technology in the out doors but not concentrate on the adam and eve part although we may incorporate it as a random shot. so we chose our final idea as being lots of close ups and camera wiggling on the technology may it be a phone, mouse, laptop, external harddrive etc. and we would then place this equipment in beautiful country side surroundings, from the streams the side of a valley aslo just really nice picturesque spots through out edale.
we arrived in edale on the 27th of october. it was a very miserable day which didn't help when it came to finding the perfect locations and creating the right sort of shot with the ideal amount of colour and contrast in it. we spent the whole day walking around finding the best looking places with the right amount of brightness which was rather difficult on a gloomy yorkshire day. we did a number of shots from a mini dv camera next to a stream, a mouse on a tree surrounded by wires with a lovely willow tree in the background looking onto a really nice view, there were also the laptop in a tree idea, a nintendo wii hiding in some leaves as well as a mobile phone hidden away in a nice long shot. the easy part was done. getting the shots was easy enough despite the bad conditions.
the real difficult bit came in the post production. although we had lots of footage we had made the mistake of not getting enough different angels of the technology in the out doors. and replaying the same footage over and over agin is just boring to look at. so after finally getting a proper idea of the structure of the story we went back out to Edale and filmed a few more shots, this filming was easy enough as we new exactly what we wanted this time round. my partner was extremily helpful and probably had a better idea in hi head of what he wanted this short project. so i left the more creative part to him as i concentrated more on the actually filming making sure all the time codes and lighting and shots all looked nice and smooth. after we got our extra footage we got to do editing. this was a huge challenge for me and my partner as neither of us have used final cut before and our very brief introduction wasn't as help full as it possibly should have been. so after a lot of fiddling about our final piece of work was finished. its finished of being 3min and 6 seconds including titles. its finished of basically alt of quick close ups slowly zooming out to see the technology as one with the wildlife and out doors. i believe it looks like a decent piece of work and im happy with the out come.

short films analysis

Over the past few weeks we've been watching several short films. All the films had depth and hidden meanings, im going to look into the themes of the films what the directors primary aim was. im going to help describe what i considered to be the films main points and discuss weather i thought the film was successful in dealing with its subject matter and why as well as discussing weather there was an element within the film that stood out and finally talking about what structure and style relate to its content. (theme & subject matter)

High rise

this short film showing a youngish mother in her council flat with her baby, we see the baby mover over towards an open window. the mother sees the baby crawling over towards the open window. the mum then walks out of the room. we get the sense that the mum is having a horrible time and really struggling with life and being a mother. we get the impression that she wants the baby to fall out of this high story council block. we then hear some screams and we can only presume its the baby, the mum then rushes in and sees the baby on the floor, she looks out the window and sees a doll has fallen out. Theres no scripts just lots of key sound effects witch really helps with the short film. the images and sound effect tell its own unique story. With the music, the sound effects and the quite hard to watch visual images this short film comes across as a very painful, difficult and stressful. the writer of this must have tried to get the point across of the hard lifestyle that comes with young pregnancies and the huge amount of responsibilities layed upon someone. i personally found this film quite hard to watch which makes me believe its done exactly what it intended to do. the film is shot very well with some great angles being used. and the link between the music and the sound effects work perfectly together to create the tension needed.

Gas Man- by lynne Ramsey

this short film is about a Scottish family, mum dad and a son and daughter. its set in the 90's and shows the dad taking his children to a christmas party. before he goes to the party he meets up with some other women with 2 other children. although nothing is said u get the impression that these other children are his from another marriage which his family dont know about. its kept quite which i presume is meant for the audience to make there own mind up about the other children. the short film is a good concept with and interesting story which goes into a lot of visual detail about how the father and children get pn with each other. its a good film and beautifully shot. the attention the detail is perfect. you get drawn into the story which makes you want to no everything about this family and where these other children have come from and how they relate to it all. although you never find out.

Love Me or Leave Me Alone

This is one of my favourite short films i've watched in a while. i loved the story and the way it was shot. the story is about a boy and a girl  both aged around 16-17. who are going out with each other but a argument occurs which results in the girl walking away from the boy, he acts as if he dosent care then after sitting down realises what hes lost. he then goes on to try and find  her. the film is basically him trying to find her so he can try and make it up to her. its quite an emotional film. the shots used though i believe are perfect. every shot has its own meaning which links in with the story perfectly. I perticuly liked the really dark shots used. the black screen with the occasional light passing over really gives you a suspense that something is going to happen although it never really does.
